Usability testing 101 still holds up in the AI era

Published 24 July 2026 · Source dated 16 January 2024

Nielsen Norman Group's core usability testing guidance is decades old — and still the fastest way to check if an AI-generated or hand-crafted design actually works. Foundational, not fashionable.

With AI agents spitting out screens in seconds, it's tempting to skip validation. NN/g's usability testing fundamentals — small, frequent, qualitative tests with real users — matter more now, not less, because AI can generate plausible-looking nonsense just as fast as it generates good work. **Why established**: this is core UX methodology with decades of evidence behind it, not a new technique. For a junior, this is a cheap way to build credibility fast: showing you tested something, even informally, sets you apart from someone who just shipped an AI-generated screen untested.
