Why MCP servers are the design-system unlock

Figma argues MCP servers only work well when a real design system backs them — otherwise AI drifts off-brand. This is adoption-stage: teams with strong systems already benefit, but it depends entirely on your system's maturity.

Figma's design-systems team makes the case that MCP servers only produce good AI output when there's a real design system behind them — tokens, documented components, naming conventions. Feed an agent a messy file with no system and you get generic, off-brand screens. Feed it a well-structured library and it can generate on-brand UI that respects your rules. For junior designers on smaller teams without a formal system, this is a good argument to make to your lead: even a lightweight token set (colour, spacing, type) and a few documented core components gives any AI tooling — and any new hire — something solid to work from. It's less about chasing the latest AI feature and more about doing the unglamorous groundwork that makes every tool, human or AI, more useful.
